Abbotsford

This city in the Fraser Valley has a population of 131,000 and is the fifth largest city in B.C. and one of the fastest growing. Most of Abbotsford’s residents live in the urban core, surrounded by farmland and rural communities such as Mount Lehman, Bradner, Matsqui Village, Clayburn Village, Barrowtown, Arnold, and Huntingdon.
Around half of the City’s housing stock is multi-family, i.e. apartments, townhouses, suites and homes with suites. The highest density of multi-family housing is in the urban areas, but even in the single-family neighbourhoods, the city’s supportive attitude to secondary suites means that there are many multi-family homes.
Nearly three-quarters of the area is devoted to agriculture and this still characterizes the city. Agriculture is the city’s third largest employer, and employment is growing.
Abbotsford has it’s own international airport. You can commute to Vancouver Island and elsewhere in BC and beyond by air. Abbotsford’s air show is an annual draw.
There is a university (University College of the Fraser Valley) and two bible colleges.
Abbotsford is well served with schools, from elementary through to high school. Mouat Secondary is featured in the August 23, 2004 issue of Macleans as the top Canadian high school under the category of “Innovation”.
